Description: | Grey and pink granodiorites with xenolith of diorite at Craigenlow Quarry. Pink coarse-grained granodiorite to diorite (Crathes type) is seen on the left of the field of view. Below centre is probably a xenolith. A diorite xenolith can be seen in the upper right, veined by grey granodiorite. Both xenoliths are enclosed in grey finer-grained granodiorite. Note the coarser-grained granodiorite with large potash feldspar crystals at lower margin of diorite. A diorite is a coarse-grained intermediate igneous rock consisting essentially of plagioclase feldspar and one or more of the ferromagnesian minerals, biotite, hornblende or augite. A xenolith is an inclusion of a pre-existing rock in a igneous rock, in this example a granodiorite. The xenolith may have one of two origins: it may be part of the surrounding country rock that has become incorporated in the magma as the pluton formed, or it may be part of an earlier solidified portion of the igneous intrusion. Xenoliths often show extensive reaction with the igneous rock. |
