Caption: Kemnay granite, Aberdeenshire.
Description: Loose block of fresh Kemnay granite with well-developed foliation due to parallel alignment of biotite crystals. Found at Kemnay Quarry, approximately 0.5 km. north-east of Kemnay Village. The granite also contains schlieren of biotitic material. The slight reddening marks are joints. The Kemnay granite is one of the late-tectonic granitic intrusions of the Caledonian Orogeny and forms one of a cluster of north-eastern biotite-muscovite granites. It is dated at 411 Ma. Contacts with the Dalradian country rock are gradational, passing through a zone of partially digested xenoliths into the country rocks that have suffered regional migmatization. Kemnay granite has been worked since 1858 for building stone, setts and kerbs. The most outstanding building constructed of the granite is Marischal College in Aberdeen, one of the largest granite buildings in the world. The same rock was used for the piers of the Forth Rail Bridge, and the docks in Hull, Sunderland, Leith and Newcastle.
