Caption: | Microdiorite dyke cutting Kemnay granite, Kemnay Quarry, Aberdeenshire. |
Description: | A microdiorite dyke in the centre of the photograph suddenly widens from c. 1 m. to c. 3 m. about 2.5 m. above ground at the east face of Kemnay Quarry, 0.5 km. north-east of Kemnay Village. The dyke has offshoots dipping gently to the left, parallel to one of the joint directions in the surrounding granite. The Kemnay granite has prominent joints in three directions; roughly parallel to the quarry face, dipping steeply to the left, dipping gently to the left. A large number run east-north-easterly while others run north-north-west. The Kemnay quarries have been long famous in the granite industry. No. 1 Quarry started in 1858 and No. 2 Quarry in 1868. The rock worked is a light-grey, medium-grained silica-rich granite consisting essentially of orthoclase feldspar, quartz, microcline and biotite and a certain amount of plagioclase and muscovite. |
