Description: The sill, a thick layer of igneous rock intruded and aligned parallel to the bedding represents a large resource of hard rock aggregate. However since the igneous rock tends to form high and conspicuous ground, there are often environmental objections to exploitation in some areas. Quarry operations in the Carboniferous quartz-dolerite Stirling Sill at Murrayshall. Aggregate is produced by crushing, grinding (comminution) and sizing with the material moving around the site by means of conveyors and feeders.
