Description: | Oblique aerial view of the Westfield Opencast Coal Mine from the west, Fife Region. The coal dump roads and various working levels or benches are seen. The size of the plant, dump trucks etc. indicate the huge scale of the workings. Due to the large size of the operation considerable preparation work had to be undertaken. Initially, four million cubic yards of peat, 30-40 feet thick had first to be removed. The pit itself has been opened up by drilling and blasting. Records show that by the end of 1975 13 million feet of drilling had been undertaken at rates from 30-100 feet per hour. |
