Description: Westfield Opencast Site (Kinglassie) with Bishop Hill and West Lomond Hill in the background, Fife Region. The workings in 1997. The method of mining is unusual for an opencast coal mine, the method being closer to that used in metalliferous mines. It utilizes of drilling, blasting and removal of coal and waste by shovels and trucks rather than the typical cut and fill and use of draglines found in most opencast coal sites.
