Description: | Oblique aerial view of Newton Hill, St. Fort Pit. Looking south-east towards North Straiton (west pit), Fife Region. It is operated by Scottish Aggregates Limited for mainly gravels. Lagoons or settling pits are in the foreground. The pit is worked in an esker. The production of gravel exceeds that of sand and the grain-size of the gravel in the pit varies from 2.5 cm. to up to one metre or more, averaging between 5 and 20 cm. In this area of the north-east of Fife there are extensive resources of sand and gravel of various types. Large quantities of moundy fluvioglacial, raised beach and deltaic sand and gravel and blown sand occur. |
