Description: | General view of Greenbrae Quarry, Hopeman, Elginshire. Looking west. Above the crane at the inclined roadway is sand and gravel of a late-glacial raised beach, below is the Permo-Triassic (New Red Sandstone) Hopeman Sandstone. This long-established quarry is being worked on a small scale for building stone. The sandstone, which hardens on exposure, can be obtained in large blocks bounded by joints and planes of aeolian cross-bedding. The building stone is used locally, in the south of Scotland, and as far afield as Sweden. |
