Description: Clothister Magnetite Mine, Sullom, Shetland Isles. General view of plant and open-cut. (On the upper part of the hill.) An adit enters the hill at the white outcrop on lower part of hill. The orebody consists of massive magnetite of a high degree of purity and with exceptionally low phosphorus content. It was discovered in 1933 by the Geological Survey of Great Britain and between 1941 and 1943 it was investigated in detail and developed with a view to exploitation by the Scottish Home Department.
