Description: Clothister Magnetite Mine, Sullom, Shetland Isles. A view of the plant. The bank in front and right of the plant is non-magnetic residue from the concentration process; it consists of garnet, hornblende, epidote and pyroxene. The magnetite was mined between 1954 and 1957 by Deering Shetland Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Deering Products Limited. The ore was extracted both by mining through an adit and by opencast methods. It is believed that between 6,000 and 10,000 tons of ore were obtained. The rate of extraction of crushed rock was 300-400 tons per month.
