Description: Wilderness Sand-pit, 2.4 km. north-west of Bishopbriggs, Lanarkshire. A close-up of the interbedded sand and gravel. The dip of the false-bedding is to the north. Note the variations between the coarse gravels and the finer sands. On the right are the hydrocyclones used for 'classification' and dewatering. A pipe extends from the base of the hydrocyclone to deposit sorted material in a conical pile. Just visible in the foreground is a face-shovel rope excavator. Classification is a method of sizing finer particles by exploiting the differences in settling velocity in water.
