In the distance to the south-west are the Pentland Hills consisting of volcanic rocks of Lower Old Red Sandstone age. Two new circular concrete-lined shafts were sunk to a depth of 2500 feet and the development of the coals was to be carried out from two main winding levels at 1900 and 2450 feet.
