Caption: Bilston Glen Colliery near Loanhead, during construction 1956, Midlothian.
Description: The mine was opened with the object of working seams in the Carboniferous Limestone Coal Group in the deeper parts of the Main Syncline. At the opening it was thought that the colliery would have a life of 100 years. Located a few hundred yards to the west of the Burghlee Pit. In the distance to the south-west are the Pentland Hills consisting of volcanic rocks of Lower Old Red Sandstone age.
