Description: Rashiehill Borehole, Slamannan, Stirling. Examination of cores in core-shed. The core is stored on shelving made of angle iron and corrugated metal sheets. The geologist wielding the hammer examines core while an assistant logs the results. The core is examined in great detail and in a systematic fashion. Records are kept of the depth the core was obtained from, the lithology of the rocks and any important sedimentary structures and fossils. After this initial examination the core would be transported to the Geological Survey of Great Britain core store for more detailed examination. From the initial and the later detailed studies it is possible to work out the stratigraphic sequence and by using indicator fossils or microfossils found in the core it would be possible to date the rock and correlate its geology with other areas as well as discover possible economic resources.
