Description: Archerbeck Borehole, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. The inside of the core-shed showing cores stored on corrugated iron racking supported by an angle-iron framework. The purpose of the borehole was to establish the Lower Carboniferous succession in this part of the Scottish Borders where the solid rocks are largely concealed by drift. By studying the core there is now a detailed record of the sequence and it has been used successfully to correlate the strata between the Langholm area and the Brampton area in England. In total, the borehole has been drilled to a depth of 4604 feet. In addition to finding the Lower Carboniferous sequence thicker than anticipated, the borehole has provided the first satisfactory record of coals in the Penton Coal Group of the Canonbie area.
