Caption: Near MacDiarmid School, Carbost, Portree, Isle of Skye, Highland Region. The North of Scotland Water Authority conducted an initial appraisal of the groundwater resources of Skye by drilling 19 trial boreholes into various rock formations.
Description: Here, drilling into Tertiary basalt to 100 m. depth is being filmed by Grampian T.V. for their nightly news programme. Drill rods are laid out for insertion into the borehole in which a down-hole air hammer was used. The basalt yields only small amounts of groundwater from fissures between lava flows, but requirements are small for many island communities and there may be some potential in the basalts as a source of water for supply.
