Caption: Chirex factory, Annan, Dumfries and Galloway Region. BGS Borehole Geophysics Land Rover at a groundwater exploration borehole site in the Chirex factory, Annan.
Description: The borehole was drilled as part of a project to assess the groundwater potential of the Triassic sandstone aquifer beneath the site, which is adjacent to the Solway coast. The borehole is sited 50 m. from the tidal estuary. Borehole geophysics was used to measure variations in salinity in the borehole to see whether there is any evidence of sea water intrusion. No saline water was encountered and the abstraction borehole scheme was completed.
