Caption: Hardthorn Road site, Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway Region. Drilling of a new groundwater production borehole to the north-west of Dumfries.
Description: During the drilling of this borehole, a very large volume of water was encountered. This led to the building of a special drainage ditch to remove the water from the site. The drainage channel led to a sump from where the water, once the drill cuttings had settled, was pumped to a natural watercourse, 400 m away. The site had already been prepared by the West of Scotland Water Authority prior to drilling by the laying of a gravel base across the site. This preparation paid off, as all heavy machinery was able to be manoeuvred easily in spite of the presence of large amounts of water.
