| Description: | The rig is a simple design that has stood the test of time. It is ideal for drilling boreholes into unconsolidated formations such as the Rasied Beach sands and gravels on Luing. A winch pulls up a 'bailer' or steel tube (in this case, 150 mm. diameter) on a cable before letting it drop through the steel casing. The bailer has a flap valve on the end which allows wet material into it. Theh flap closes when the bailer is pulled up to the surface and the contents poured out. The casing is then hammered into the ground to make progress with depth. |
