Description: | Tungsten carbide winged drill bit (used on left, unused on right). Fragments of tungsten carbide are welded onto the drill bit to create a strong abrasive surface to cut the rocks. Such drill bits are used to drill unconsolidated, gravelly and weakly-cemented sediments. Drilling is required to obtain samples of the rocks beneath the sea bed. A wide range of drill bits have been developed from the mining and oil industries to collect samples of the diverse geology around the UK. |
