Description: Anchor winches on the drilling vessel MV Whitethorn during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. The Whitethorn drilling vessel used up to six anchors to hold the vessel on location whilst drilling. The anchor cables were up to 1 km. in length. Drilling ships are required to obtain samples of the rocks from beneath the sea bed. The British Geological Survey used the Whitethorn for drilling in the early 1970?s and 1980's. More modern vessels and all deep water operations vessels hold station by thrusters.
