Description: | Drilling equipment on the MV Whitethorn during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. Wireline core barrel inner tube showing retrieval head and cutting shoe. This photograph shows the inner core barrels that were lowered down inside the drill pipe. During wireline drilling the core would collect in the core barrels. Periodically, the barrels would be hoisted back to the surface and the core recovered. During the wireline coring process the inner barrel is seated behind the main core bit, inside the drillstring, and when it is filled with core it is fished up the inside of the drill string so that the core can be retrieved. Shallow coring was required for site-investigations and geological mapping. |
