Description: | Drilling operations on the MV Whitethorn during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. To the left are the large steel cable winches used in lowering and retrieving the drill string. Drilling on this ship was done using an over-the-side-drilling derrick. When on passage, the derrick would sit mid-ships. Arriving on the site, the derrick was moved over the side and drilling took place. This was before ships were fitted with moonpools. Shallow coring was required for site-investigations and geological mapping. |
