Description: | Preparation of the drill floor and machinery on board the MV Whitethorn during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. Drilling on this ship was done using an over-the-side-drilling derrick. When on passage, the derrick would sit midships. Arriving on the site, the derrick was moved over the side and drilling took place. This was before ships were fitted with moonpools. Note the mud hoses used to pump mud down the centre of the drill string for lubrication during drilling. The wireline coring system onboard the drilling vessel requires to be prepared for running the drillstring prior to commencement of coring operations on the sea floor. Shallow coring was required for site-investigations and geological mapping |
