Description: Examples of rock recovered by drilling off the coast of Scotland by the Institute of Geological Sciences. They are cores collected by wireline drilling that are boxed for later examination. Core recovered by the drilling process was packed in containers for examination and analysis onshore. The core is catalogued and stored in large core stores, the Institute of Geological Sciences (now British Geological Survey) has one such store at Loanhead, Midlothian. Rock cores from sample sites identified in geophysical records are collected from the drilling ship and taken to the laboratory for identification and analysis. Shallow coring was required for site-investigations and geological mapping.
