Description: | Gravity core barrels were damaged if the sea bed was too hard during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. To obtain unconsolidated cores of the sea bed to 2000 m. water depth a vibration method of coring can be employed to push a core barrel 6 m. into the sea bed. The photograph shows damaged core barrels. They have been bent by hitting a sea bed which is too hard for the corer to penetrate. Sampling devices are used to obtain material from the sea bed and sub-sea bed. |
