Description: | A Shipek Grab and a gravity corer in the launch position during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. The photograph shows two sampling deveices in the launch position hanging over the aft end of a survey vessel. The device on the left is a Shipek Grab which takes samples of the sea-bed sediments. The other device is a gravity corer which takes a shallow core of the material beneath the sea-bed sediment. This is a core barrel with a heavy weight on the top. The weight drives the corer into the sea bed. Sampling devices are used to obtain material from the sea bed and sub-sea bed. |
