Description: | Coring device in launch position onboard a survey vessel during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. This was a coring device. It was lowered to the sea bed then could take a core up to 6 m. in length. The motor at the top of the frame uses a vibratory action to drive the core barrel into the sea bed. There was a need to develop shallow coring devices to obtain information on the nature of the material underlying the sea-bed sediments. Such devices are used in site-investigation work, for example, platform installation or pipe laying. |
