Description: | View of the drilling derrick from the drill floor survey vessel MV Whitethorn during exploratory drilling by the British Geological Survey. The drilling derrick is the tower above the drilling platform. It contain the lifting gear for the drill barrels and other types of drilling equipment. The travelling block part of the pulley system for lowering and raising the drill pipe is clearly visible. Drilling is used throughout the oil and minerals industry for collecting samples from deep beneath the surface. The samples are analysed on return from the surface. |
