Description: | View of the drilling derrick from the drill floor survey vessel MV Whitethorn during exploratory drilling by the British Geological Survey. The drilling derrick is the tower above the drilling platform. It contain the lifting gear for the drill barrels and other types of drilling equipment. A section of drill pipe can be seen suspended beneath the derrick. Above the drill pipe is the travelling block, part of the lifting gear. Drilling is used throughout the oil and minerals industry for collecting samples from deep beneath the surface. The samples are analysed on return from the surface. |
