Description: | A pinger system being launched from the deck of the survey vessel Challenger, used during offshore seismic exploration by the British Geological Survey. A pinger is a very high frequency seismic system. It consists of one or more transducers which transmit pulses of acoustic energy and then listen for the return echoes. The system is towed behind the survey vessel. The system is usually housed in a hydrodynamically stable ?fish?. Seismic surveying is a very cost-effective method for the remote surveying of the geology beneath the sea bed. It is used routinely by the oil industry with a variety of acoustic sources. |
