Caption: Double drag-fold, Barleyhole Rocks, Mawcarr Stells, Berwickshire.
Description: Double drag-fold in Silurian greywackes at the shore at Barleyhole Rocks, east 39 m. west-north-west of Mawcarr Stells. The rocks dip at c. 55 degrees to 170 degrees. The fold appears to pass very quickly along the strike into a strike fault. The beds form part of a limb, c. 366 m. wide, of a major fold or limb in which few variations of dip and strike are observed. Drag-folds are uncommon in this area. Drag-folds are minor folds that are formed in a thinly laminated or soft bed lying between harder or more rigid beds. They are produced by the movement of the beds in opposite directions relative to one another. Silurian rocks of Llandovery age outcrop along the coast north-west of St. Abb's Head. They consist of a highly folded sequence of greywackes, siltstones and mudstones hundreds of metres thick but lacking distinguishable horizons or groupings that could be used in correlation.
