Description: The photograph shows a Shipek Grab sample being taken of the sea bed during exploration by the British Geological Survey. The Shipek Grab was a scoop device which collected a sample of the sea bed for analysis back onshore. As the grab reached the sea bed, it triggered a camera system to take a photograph. A compass can is visible in the shot. This was used to measure the orientation of any sea bed features, such as, ripples. The problem with taking remote samples of the sea bed using a grab lowered from a survey vessel is that the context of the sediment is not recorded. British Geological Survey developed a grab system which automatically took a photograph of the sea bed as the sample was collected.
