Description: | Photograph of a British Geological Survey diver taking a short core sample of the sea bed off Lossiemouth. The sea bed consists of fine, rippled sand. The diver is taking a sample of the sea bed using a plastic bottle. Once he had scooped up the sample he places the lid on the jar. The sample would then be described and analysed onshore. Divers could be used to collect samples in suitable shallow water locations. However, it is more cost-effective and less dangerous to use machinery for geological underwater surveying than people. |
