Description: | Photograph of a diver taking a short core sample of the sea bed off Lossiemouth during geological exploration by the British Geological Survey. The sea bed consists of fine, rippled sand. The diver is placing a section of clear plastic tubing into the sea bed in order to recover a short core. The hammer was used to drive the tube into the sea bed if the sediments were stiff. Divers could be used to collect samples in suitable shallow water locations. However, it is more cost-effective and less dangerous to use machinery for geological underwater surveying. |
