Description: | Photograph of the drilling ship Whitethorn. Used for exploratory drilling during the early phases of oil exploration in the North Sea. The Whitethorn was a converted cargo vessel, owned by Coe-Metcalf, which was used by the British Geological Survey to map the sea bed and subsurface geology off Scotland. It was an early version of survey vessels used by the oil industry for site-investigation work. It has a drilling rig which was used to obtain samples of core from tens of metres beneath the sea bed, and cranes suitable for hoisting sea-bed sampling devices. British Geological Survey had a requirement for a multi-purpose geological sampling vessel to map the UK continental shelf. At the same time, the developing oil industry had similar requirements. Initially such vessels were converted from other uses. Later, however, such vessels were designed and built specifically for survey work. |
