Description: | Photograph of Consub the unmanned submersible in its launch position suspended from the A-frame at the stern of the mother vessel, the RVS Challenger. Consub was used by the British Geological Survey to map areas of the sea bed off the Scottish coast. This work was undertaken during trials of the technology. The vehicle could take photographs of the sea bed and carried a small drill which could core rock outcrop. There was a demand for a relatively cheap and flexible system to survey the sea bed. This was important to the developing offshore oil industry. There were pipelines and installations that required examination. |
