Description: | Trial launch of the unmanned submersible Consub from the stern of the RVS Challenger. Consub was an unmanned submersible developed with government support. The vehicle was built by BAC and the British Geological Survey was involved in the trials. It is essentially a metal frame containing electric motors, camera systems and small manipulators or sampling devices. It was connected to the mother ship by an umbilical cable which provided power and data. The vehicle was operated by a ?pilot? on board the ship, who had a view from the vehicle via a television camera. There was a demand for a relatively cheap and flexible system to survey the sea bed. This was important to the developing offshore oil industry. There were pipelines and installations that required examination. |
