Description: | An advertising poster describing Consub, an unmanned submersible for use in geological mapping of the sea bed. The Consub is now located outside the entrance to the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh. Consub was an early attempt at developing an unmanned submersible for use in geological mapping of the sea bed and for use within the oil industry. The work was funded by government agencies, and the British Geological Survey was involved in the sea trials. The poster contains information on the technical specification of the vehicle, and shows where it was used. In the early 1970?s, the only options to survey the sea bed were to send down a piloted submersible, which was very expensive, or use divers, which was potentially dangerous. There was a demand for a manoueverable submersible that carried an array of equipment and was controlled from the surface. Consub was an early attempt at developing suitable technology. |
