Description: The manned submersible Pisces in the hanger on board the mother ship R.V. Vickers Venturer. The underside of the submersible contains the pressure vessel in which the crew are located. This view is of the front of the craft. There are 3 viewing ports visible (the large round portholes) through which the crew can view the sea bed. Numerous lights and camera systems are attached to the outside (both stereo cameras and cine/TV systems). The geologists also described the sea bed and this was recorded as a sound track to the film. One of the propulsions motors is visible on the left side of the craft. Various tools could be fitted which were controlled by the geologists. There is a rock drill on the left that could drill cores up to 5 cm. in length, a manipulator arm that could pick up rocks and samples from the sea bed, and an open basket that held the samples until the craft returned to the surface. The Vickers submersible Pisces, along with its mother-ship the RV Vickers Venturer, was chartered by the British Geological Survey on three occasions between 1969 and 1971 for geological surveying west of Scotland and in the Irish Sea. This meant that geologists could examine the sea bed in detail and take samples in water depths too great for divers.
