Description: | The Pisces manned submersible at the sea surface during geological investigations of the sea bed off the west coast of Scotland. Pisces is a free-diving submersible which carries a pilot plus two observers. Its maximum design depth was 1060 m. below the sea surface. The rope in the water is a line attaching the craft to the mother-ship. The Vickers submersible Pisces, along with its mother ship the RV Vickers Venturer, was chartered by the British Geological Survey on three occasions between 1969 and 1971. This meant that geologists could examine the sea-bed and take samples in water depths too great for divers. At this time, there was very little remote equipment available for surveying and taking geological samples of the sea bed. |
