Caption: Oblique aerial view of Bass Rock, East Lothian.
Description: Its vertical sides reaching from over 45 m. above to at least 18 m. below O.D. reflect the edge of the resistant plug. The grey rock is hard and massively jointed and very fresh under superficial weathering. It is composed of non-porphyritic, orthophyric, fairly coarse-grained, phonolitic trachyte. The islet has had a long history, from reputedly being a retreat for St. Baldred and other early Christian hermits to its use as a fortress. The building in the centre is the lighthouse. Its fame today is as a bird reserve especially noted for its gannets. This islet is the most famous topographical feature in the Dunbar area and is known to geologists as a classical volcanic plug and as a widely visible landmark. The phonolitic trachyte plug is an intrusion related to the Carboniferous Garleton Hills Volcanic Rocks.
