Description: Oblique aerial view of Dunbar, looking from the west-north-west. The town is built on flattish ground of glacial and raised beach deposits. The Lower Carboniferous sedimentary and igneous rocks are exposed in cliffs and on the intertidal foreshore. West Bay on the right front is a large vent agglomerate crossed by dykes/joints with bedded red sandstones above; Dunbar Castle and harbour entrance are situated on vent agglomerate and intrusion; the Battery to left of the harbour is on a basanite intrusion (a volcanic plug) with hexagonal columnar joints. Beyond is the flat arable ground of the Lower Carboniferous Dunbar Basin with thick beds of limestone being exploited by the Dunbar Cement works. The A1 road has been diverted round the deposits on right; works with chimney in centre to right of old A1; restored first phase is to the right of the railway; second phase quarry to left; remaining resource is under the green field beyond. The rounded Lammermuir Hills on the skyline, lying across the Southern Upland Fault, consist of Ordovician and Silurian folded greywackes and shales of the Southern Upland Terrane.
