Caption: Oblique aerial view of Dunbar and Dunbar Harbour, looking from the east-north-east.
Description: The Battery, centre front, is built on a basanite intrusion (a volcanic plug) with hexagonal columnar joints; Dunbar Castle and harbour entrance, on vent agglomerate and basanite intrusion; West Bay, red sandstones while in the top right is a large vent agglomerate crossed by dykes/joints. The volcanic necks (pipes) filled with vent agglomerates are the former underground feeders which fed early Carboniferous (Dinantian) volcanoes. The town is built on flattish ground of glacial and raised beach deposits. The Lower Carboniferous sedimentary and igneous rocks are exposed in cliffs and on the intertidal foreshore.
