Description: | View west along Loch Cluanie from near the Cluanie Dam. Highland Region. This eastern end of the loch is composed of the Cluanie Granodiorite, a major igneous intrusion of late- to post-tectonic (late-Caledonian orogeny) age. The Cluanie Intrusion covers 18 square kilometres and is composed of a single rock type a variably porphyritic hornblende-biotite granodiorite within which there are several textural variants depending on the occurrence of megacrysts. A granodiorite is a coarse-grained acid igneous rock consisting of quartz, calc-alkali feldspar and various ferromagnesian minerals, commonly and in this case, hornblende. Megacrysts are crystals in an igneous rock that are significantly larger than the surrounding groundmass or matrix. |
