Description: Loch Cluanie and the Cluanie Dam with An Garbh-leitir, part of the Bunloinn Forest on the south side of the loch. Highland Region. This area around the eastern end of the loch is composed of the Cluanie Granodiorite, a major igneous body. This late- to post-tectonic (late-Caledonian orogeny) age intrusion has been dated at 417 Ma. and 425 Ma. and has been intruded into rocks of Moine age. The pluton is cut by many dykes of the Microdiorite Suite. The intrusion lies in the heart of an area dominated by intense deformation and metamorphism which culminated in the Caledonian orogenic belt in late Precambrian and early Palaeozoic times.
