The Lochnagar Granite complex forms much of the skyline. It was emplaced as a zoned pluton of four main phases, each multicomponent. The main phase of igneous activity in the Grampian Highlands is represented by the emplacement of large volumes of calc-alkaline magma during a period of post-orogenic uplift. These intrusions are often known as the 'Newer Granites'. The Lochnagar Granite belongs to the Cairngorm suite of these granites. |
