Description: | Lochnagar from Peter's Hill, Ballater. Aberdeenshire. View over Middle Dalradian metasediments and metabasic rocks to the Lochnagar Granite in the background. The Lochnagar Granite complex forms much of the skyline. It was emplaced as a zoned pluton of four main phases, each multicomponent. The main phase of igneous activity in the Grampian Highlands is represented by the emplacement of large volumes of calc-alkaline magma during a period of post-orogenic uplift. These intrusions are often known as the 'Newer Granites'. The Lochnagar Granite belongs to the Cairngorm suite of these granites. |
