Description: A view of South Black Hill taken from Harlaw Muir, Penicuik. Hills to left are East Kip (in basalt), South Black Hill (trachyte), Scald Law (trachyte of south-east face, but summit in rhyolitic tuff). The volcanic rocks of the Pentland Hills consist of ten distinct lava groups with interbedded pyroclastic and some sedimentary beds. They have a maximum thickness of 6,000 ft. in the north Pentlands and thin rapidly to the south.
