Description: De'il's Dyke, near Keppel Pier, Millport, Great Cumbrae. Buteshire. Tertiary age tholeiitic andesite dyke. One of the type localities for 'cumbraeite' (an anorthite-enstatite-augite hyalo-andesite). The dyke trends north-north-west to south-south-east, is up to 3.6 m. wide and cuts red sandstones of Upper Devonian age. It forms a vertical wall reaching a height of 30 feet and is situated on the raised beach. It averages 20 feet in width, splits into two sections on the shore and reunites at low-water mark. The dyke is part of a major swarm of north-west - south-east trending dykes associated with the intense and prolonged Tertiary volcanism that was spread over eleven million years from 63-52 Ma. In particular, they are associated with the dyke swarm emanating from Mull.
